What's Good?
Welcome to my website where I'll be posing activities that I'll be doing throughout my sophomore year at Duval High school, that range from Biographies to books with comedy in them. Mind you this is for my English class so all of it has to do with literature. One reason I like that I'm doing this for my English class is because I love reading interesting books especially if they have humorous moments since I'm a funny person myself.
Quarter 4
As the school year winds down, my teacher decided for us to end on a good note. For the last Quarter we did the play Macbeth and also worked on something called ScienceBEAT.
Macbeth reflection
The play Macbeth is a tragedy which is a play where the main character who has all the qualities of a hero makes one grave mistake, which leads to his downfall because of his actions. Macbeth is a Tragic Hero which by definition is a character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction.
In my opinion Macbeth is a true tragic hero. He was once someone with all the qualities of a hero, but because of a decision to act on his eagerness to be king with persuasion of his wife he kills the king. This one decision led him to commit many murders until him and his wife went crazy and eventually the former king's son kills him.

Sciencebeat article
The next thing we worked on was ScienceBEAT. We did this after a climate change scientist visited our class to record our thoughts on climate change. He then allowed us to take part in a module that talks about climate change and it's effects. In the end we wrote articles on what we think solutions to reverse climate change are.

Climate Change and the Future
In March of 2016, NASA recorded a new record temperature for the sixth time that year! For the past six months the earth’s temperature has been above 2 degrees of the average earth temperature. At the rate we’re going because of our CO2 emission rates, the world temperature will continue to increase drastically. It’s possible to reverse this even with the damages done. In fact we are doing this now by cutting down on the amount of fossil fuels used by switching to renewable energy sources like solar power. We can also cut down on our CO2 emissions as well. “ Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and planting trees could help slow and eventually reverse global warming trends.” (JONATHAN STRICKLAND-HowStuffWorks.com) This is because it takes time for our environment to absorb carbon dioxide and we are creating more than the environment can absorb at the time. By planting trees we are not only slowly reversing climate change but also benefiting wildlife in different areas. We as a society benefit from this as it makes our earth greener and provides us with cleaner air to breath in. Another way to reverse climate change is by cutting most of our uses of fossil fuels down in preference of renewable energy sources. Small things such as turning your lights off when you're not using it and transitioning from driving everywhere to taking the metro once in awhile can have an impact in the future. This way we can preserve those nonrenewable resources all while cutting down CO2 emission from cars. We are “... the last generation to see the effects of climate change and the last generation to do something about it.” (President Obama). This statement rings true and should be a wake up call for us to find ways to reverse climate changes effects around the world. There are so many benefits besides us saving our planet like the money that could be made from inventions or businesses dedicated to this cause. Climate change innovation can bring in much needed money to places such as the United States to increase economic growth. The more innovations created means a surplus that goes to the U.S. economy. In the end this change can be brought on by only us as our generation is feeling it’s effects more than any other. This makes it our job to fix the problem as if we don’t many changes can take place on earth in the next couple of decades.
40 Question Reflection
Finally for the last thing we have to do this school year, we were assigned a 40 question reflection that asked us different things about what we think we learned, what knowledge we came into the class with and what we took away from this entire school year.
*BACKWARD-LOOKING*
1. How much did you know about English, specifically writing persuasive or analytic papers before we started this year in August?
- I knew, or at least I thought I knew, how to write a five paragraph essay. And, I knew what persuasive writing.
2. What process did you go through to produce the last ScienceBEAT piece we wrote? Is it the same process that you always use to write or was it different?
- Well, first I picked what I wanted to write about. Then, I learned a bit more about the topic I chose because I already knew a lot about it. Finally, I wrote the paper. Other then the fact that I interviewed someone for my paper it was about the same process. Normally, I put more thought into my writing but since it wasn't my usual style and was a persuasive paper that is far more fact based than my normal works therefore needing less of by personal thoughts on the topic.
3. Have you done a similar kind of work in the past?
- No, I have not done any similar works, most of the time in school we worked on essay writing. And, personally I write and prefer fiction.
4. In what ways have you gotten better at this kind of work?
- I assume I know the basics in writing in a persuasive works now and that alone makes me better at writing it now. I also feel that I've become more comfortable writing nonfiction informative works.
5. In what ways do you think you need to improve?
- I think I need to work on taking my voice and personal style and taking it out of my works slightly. I know a writer should always have their own voice, or view they write in but I'm pretty sure mine comes out way too much when I'm suppose to be writing serious works that aren't opinion based.
6. What problems did you encounter while you were working on the ScienceBEAT piece? How did you solve them?
- I didn't having any problems when working on my ScienceBEAT piece, I thought it was pretty simple.
7. What resources did you use while working on this piece? Which ones were especially helpful? Which ones would you use again?
- One source I used was Ryan. He was really helpful because he seemed pretty sure of what he was talking about. I might use him as a source again, maybe for something I know he knows more about.
8. Does the work displayed on your ePortfolio for the entire year work to tell a story?
- Yes, I believe my works does tell a story. My work throughout the year tells the story of a student who tried hard in the beginning but slacked off a little.

- I learned that as I become more tired of working on something I just put whatever to get it finished.
9. Have you changed any ideas you used to have on this subject, English and writing?
- I always had the idea that there was no way essay writing could be fun, and I was right it's still not fun but it's not that bad.
10. Look at a specific piece of work that you did at the beginning of the year in Quarter 1, maybe your best piece from Quarter 1 or maybe your worst. You decide. Then use that chosen work to compare and contrast with your final project of the year, your ScienceBEAT article. What changes can you see?
- Will the first major change between my ScienceBEAT article and the first essay I ever did is that I finished my ScienceBEAT paper with many facts and wrote better. I think all of my projects came out good.

- I think the changes came from my will to do the assignment and the amount of effort I used.
